Could Sugar Be Making Your Joint Pain Worse?
What Boise Residents Should Know About Blood Sugar, Inflammation & Healthy Aging
If you've been searching for natural pain relief in Boise chances are you've tried a few different things.
Massage therapy.
Chiropractic care.
Stretching.
New shoes.
Better pillows.
Maybe even anti-inflammatory medications or supplements.
Sometimes those things help. Sometimes they don't. One reason is that pain doesn't always begin where it hurts. It’s often a culmination of your daily habits. I don’t exclusively mean your posture - your lifestyle matters more than you’ve been led to believe.
As a massage therapist, I've spent more than two decades helping people with neck pain, back pain, headaches, plantar fasciitis, shoulder pain, hip pain, and chronic muscle tension. While hands on bodywork can dramatically improve mobility and relieve pain, I've learned something important over the years:
Your body is constantly responding to what happens between massage appointments. The foods you eat, your sleep habits, stress levels, movement, and blood sugar all influence how your tissues recover. If you're constantly fighting inflammation, your muscles and joints may never get the opportunity to fully heal.
The Hidden Connection Between Sugar and Joint Pain
When most people think about sugar they are aware it’s not healthy. That’s why there are countless alternative sweeteners on the market. Hormonally speaking none of them are actually sugar free.
Make it stand out
Which food will raise your blood sugar the most when you eat it?
Every time we eat foods that significantly raise blood glucose, our body releases insulin to move that glucose out of the bloodstream. Here’s the thing though, you don’t technically have to eat carbohydrates to get an insulin response.
When something sweet touches your tongue your body releases insulin whether there’s sugar in it or not. It’s one of the reasons alternative sweeteners increase your likelihood of becoming diabetic.
Over time frequent blood sugar spikes may contribute to insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction—all of which are associated with increased pain and many chronic diseases.
Research has linked poor metabolic health with conditions including:
Osteoarthritis
Type 2 diabetes
Heart disease
Fatty liver disease
Peripheral neuropathy
Kidney disease
Vision problems
Cognitive decline
While joint pain has many possible causes chronic inflammation is one factor that deserves attention.
Did you figure out which food would raise your blood sugar the most in the image above? Here’s the answer:
That’s right! The bread will raise your blood sugar more than a Snickers Bar.
What some consider a healthy day of eating:
Grains and sweetened coffee for breakfast.
A turkey sandwich for lunch.
Whole wheat pasta for dinner.
Why Your Massage Might Not Last
This is why it’s important to beware of of seemingly healthy foods. They can raise your blood sugar more than table sugar and leave you wondering -"Why do you tighten right back up?"
Poor Posture, Body Mechanics, & Inflammation
Sleep and work are typically where we spend most of our time. People who sit at a desk have just as many aches and pains as those who perform manual labor. Your posture and your ability to manage stress play a role, but more often than not I’d say most people are simply chronically inflamed.
Inflamed tissues don't move well. When your body is constantly managing elevated inflammation your muscles become protective. Fascia loses elasticity and recovery slows.
Massage therapy helps restore movement and decrease muscle guarding but if the underlying inflammatory environment doesn't change your body may continue recreating those same tension patterns.
That's why I believe lasting wellness comes from addressing both the body and lifestyle.
What Is Glycation?
One of the lesser-known effects of chronically elevated blood sugar is a process called glycation. Glycation occurs when excess glucose attaches to proteins like collagen.
Collagen is the structural protein that gives strength and flexibility to:
Skin
Tendons
Ligaments
Cartilage
Blood vessels
Joint capsules
When collagen becomes glycated, it becomes stiffer and less resilient. Scientists refer to these damaged molecules as Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). AGEs have been associated with accelerated aging and increased inflammation throughout the body.
This doesn't mean eating one cookie will damage your joints. The concern is repeated exposure to chronically elevated blood sugar over many years. Think of it as cumulative wear and tear.
Sugar Doesn't Only Come From Dessert
Many people proudly tell me, "I don't eat sweets."
Then they describe eating cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, pasta for dinner, crackers as snacks, and sports drinks after workouts.
Your body doesn't categorize carbohydrates into "healthy" and "unhealthy."
It breaks many of them down into glucose. Different foods affect blood sugar differently, but refined grains, sugary drinks, desserts, and many processed foods can all contribute to larger glucose spikes. This is why simply skipping dessert doesn't always solve the problem.
Why Sugar Cravings Can Be So Difficult
Sugar and cocaine affect the same part of the brain. This is why it can be difficult to break the habit. In my coaching program I gradually help you move away from blood sugar spikes via diet and lifestyle.
If you've ever tried cutting sugar, you know the cravings can feel overwhelming. Blood sugar swings create a cycle:
High-carb meal.
Blood sugar rises.
Insulin increases.
Blood sugar falls.
Hunger returns.
Repeat.
Poor sleep and chronic stress can amplify that cycle because stress hormones such as cortisol influence blood glucose regulation. Many people blame themselves for lacking willpower but honestly no one can willpower their way through this hormonal cascade.
The Role of Sleep in Pain and Recovery
Sleep is one of the most underrated tools for reducing pain.
When you're sleep deprived:
Recovery slows.
Stress hormones increase.
Appetite often rises.
Cravings for quick energy become stronger.
Pain sensitivity may increase.
I've found that clients who consistently sleep well often hold their massage results longer than those who are chronically exhausted. Good recovery isn't glamorous but it's incredibly powerful.
Ancestral Nutrition: A Simpler Way to Eat
As a Certified Primal Health Coach I encourage people to think less about counting calories and more about eating foods our bodies have recognized for generations. The trick to getting off the sugar rollercoaster is to help your body remember how to use stored body fat for fuel.
Your body can store far more fat than glucose. Combined with the correct training this can give you a competitive advantage in sporting events. It definitely slows the aging process, improves your sleep, reduces joint pain, gives you consistent energy, no more feeling Hangry, you’ll reduce your chances of developing a chronic disease, and weight loss will feel easy.
What I teach is so incredibly simple I think most people have a hard time believing it works. We’ve gotten into our head that if it doesn’t suck in some way it must not work. Friends, health is incredibly simple when you stick to whole foods like:
Beef
Poultry
Fish
Eggs
Vegetables
Seasonal fruit
Animal fats
Herbs and spices
This approach naturally lowers the overall glycemic load of many meals without obsessing over numbers. It's also remarkably satisfying. Many people notice they feel fuller longer while experiencing fewer afternoon energy crashes.
Healthy Aging Starts Earlier Than You Think
Most people assume stiff joints are simply part of getting older. I don't believe aging automatically means living in pain. Our daily habits influence how we age.
Movement matters.
Strength matters.
Sleep matters.
Stress management matters.
Nutrition matters.
None of these guarantees perfect health but together they create an environment that supports healthy tissues instead of chronic inflammation.
What Massage Therapy Can and Can't Do
Massage therapy is incredibly effective for reducing muscle tension, improving mobility, decreasing stress, and helping people reconnect with their bodies.
At my Boise-Meridian practice I combine 24 years of medical massage with 10 years of ancestral health coaching. Massage isn’t magic. If someone sleeps five hours per night, lives on processed food, experiences constant stress, and rarely moves, there's only so much I can accomplish on the massage table alone.
That's why education has become an important part of my practice. You don't have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Start with one habit.
Choose water instead of soda.
Replace one processed meal with real food.
Go for a walk after dinner.
Aim for an extra 30 minutes of sleep.
Eat more protein at breakfast.
These simple changes can improve blood sugar regulation and reduce the daily inflammatory burden your body carries. Progress almost always beats perfection.
Why This Matters for Long Term Health
Healthy blood sugar isn't only about preventing diabetes. It's about protecting the tissues you rely on every day.
Your joints.
Your muscles.
Your nerves.
Your heart.
Your liver.
Your lungs.
Your kidneys.
Your brain.
Your eyes.
The habits that support better blood sugar today are often the same habits that support healthier aging tomorrow. Pain is rarely random. Your body is always communicating.
Sometimes it's asking for movement.
Sometimes it's asking for rest.
Sometimes it's asking for better nutrition.
And sometimes it's asking for all three.
If you're looking for massage therapy in Boise, Meridian, Eagle, or the Treasure Valley and want someone who considers the whole picture—not just where it hurts—I would love to help.
Together we can work to improve how your body moves today while building habits that support healthier joints, better recovery, and lasting wellness for years to come.
